TaskPaper – Plain text to-dos 3.8.4
Lastly, while you can copy multiple to-dos at once, you cannot copy a project and its to-dos, which means you’d need to manually copy and paste the project (along with its notes). TaskPaper 3 is the program I always hoped Taskpaper would be - syncing via Dropbox/iCloud (instead of its own service), folding outlines, scriptable - all while retaining the great looks and the portability of plain text of the original. It’s simple to use, but there’s a boat-load of power here if you dig into it. If you love outlining (and who doesn’t!?!) this is the best of the lightweight list makers. TaskPaper 3 User’s Guide Requirements: Mac OS X 10.9 or higher - 64-bit Ease of use – If we have to look up how to figure out an app, then it’s not going to make the cut. A great notes app will be intuitive enough to create, find, and organize our notes on first launch. Trello - Project management tool

Make it fast to add new tasks without opening the app, ideally using a keyboard shortcut.
If you’re frustrated by underperforming productivity apps and want to bring a little simplicity into your routine, TaskPaper has you covered.

Statistics of current file are represented in status-bar, based on stats_format, which is "$n/$a done ($percent%) $progress Last task @done $last" by default — as you can see it’s just a string containing special directives (see table bellow) and regular chars.

I guess the point was that it's still not the same thing. Sure you can do a whole lot of things with emacs if you configure it properly, but configuring everything to work together takes much more time than a complete feature set that is already included.
If you're on a Mac, you can use GeekTool to display your to-do list instead. Assuming you have GeekTool set up, all you need to do is open up GeekTool, drag a new "File" Geeklet to your desktop, click on it, and navigate to your file under "File".
